SERMON - HOW DO I RECEIVE HOLY SPIRIT EMPOWERMENT?

 Kris Vallotton | Nov 04, 2022
In this message from January 9th, 2022 at Bethel Church in Redding CA, Kris Vallotton teaches that the gospel was always intended to be displayed in a Believer through both character and the power of the Holy Spirit. Many assume that discipleship is about behavior modification when in truth, Jesus always intended discipleship to be about releasing people into their God-given gifts and destiny. He shares that Christians have a tendency to ensure people are “worthy” before they have power but in fact, the gospel cannot be separated from power!

HOW TO RECEIVE HOLY SPIRIT EMPOWERMENT SERMON NOTES

- When Jesus first appeared to the disciples after his resurrection, he breathed on them to receive the Holy Spirit and their very first mandate was to forgive (John 20:19-23). Likewise, our first ministry when the Holy Spirit enters our life is to forgive those who don’t deserve it.

- After Jesus breathed on the disciples, He warned them to remain in Jerusalem for the baptism of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4-5). In Acts 2, the disciples receive this second touch when the Holy Spirit came upon them in power.

- In the same way, when you receive Christ, you become a new creation and the Holy Spirit fills you but there is a second filling of power. I’d urge you to not “leave” for ministry without this power of the Holy Spirit.

- The Holy Spirit is in you for your benefit but He rests upon you for others.

- I’d propose that you can’t separate the power of God from the power of the gospel and a gospel void of power is not the gospel at all.

- This power that you receive is then meant to be given away, commonly through the laying of hands, and it is not withheld for the mature believer (Acts 19:1-7).

- Jesus is the perfect example of discipleship and his discipleship wasn't just based on character. Early on, he sends the disciples out to, “drive out all demons and to cure diseases…to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick” (Mark 16:15-18). He always intended discipleship to be about releasing people into their God given gifts and destiny.

- We have a tendency to try and ensure that people are worthy before they have “power” but Jesus sends us out!

- As followers of Jesus, we are called to be like the disciples - people who don’t just know how to read the Bible but ones who perform signs and wonders!

- The truth is, you can’t separate the gospel from power and as believers, we should be able to move in power from the time we believe.

- John 9:1-34 tells the story of the blind man that Jesus heals. When he is questioned by the religious leaders about how he was healed, he doesn’t convince them with good arguments but through the testimony of his miraculous healing.

- A man with an argument has no power against a man with an experience!

- Let us be men and women who arise in the darkness and in the power of the Holy Spirit, be the light we were created to be.
