UNDERSTANDING THE SCRIPTURES

Does the Bible feel complex and complicated? Do you ever sit down and wonder where to start or how to understand the Word of God? Many Believers feel intimidated by text and overwhelmed by the thought. Yet, the Word of God is one of our greatest gifts as Believers; it is alive and active and sharper than a double edged sword. In this week’s podcast I share a message on understanding the scriptures. The Pharisees knew the Word of God, Believers have memorized it, but I’d propose we are intended to experience God through it.

John 1:1 says: In the beginning there was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. Before the Bible was something to read it was something to experience. What I am getting at is that so often we miss the mark when we solely know the scriptures, but neglect getting to know the Author. The Bible is an invitation to an experience with God. Now, let me be clear, I am not saying that it is not important to read and seek to understand the scriptures, but we must be aware of the value of knowing the Author. Many people argue that if you base your relationship with God on experience you can be deceived. But, I would argue memorizing the Bible without getting to know the Author is deception. It is a dead end to the journey to have a relationship with the Bible that doesn’t lead you to a relationship with God. When it comes to understanding scriptures God has given us the Holy Spirit to help bring guidance and understanding to scripture. The greatest source of Truth lives inside of us; guiding us to truth.

I want to encourage you if reading scriptures has felt overwhelming and the idea of sitting with the Word of God feels daunting or if you have felt stuck on the tracks of the pages to invite the Holy Spirit to guide you through the scriptures. Ask the Lord to meet you in the pages; He eagerly awaits to encounter you through the Word of God.
